Peugeot 308 Turbo Update

Is been a long time since I last updated on my darling's beloved feline or 'Pug'... The car is with us for more than a year now and everything is great except some minor niggles here and there... The first problem that we encounter is a very small problem... The problem is the autolock function somehow got disable and it just refuse to autolock...

The second problem is something of a shock to me as this problem usually occurs to high mileage vehicles but we got it before the odometer manage to clock in 10,000km!!! Guess we are really unlucky... The problem is with the wheel bearing... But luckily the car is still under warranty and the service center happily change it for me... Free of course and I left a happy man once again!!!

After that, we encounter another problem... A flat battery on a car clocking only around 20,000km ++... This is something new to me as well because through out my driving days, I've yet to encounter problem such as this because normally battery can last at least a year before they started giving up on you... But from what I know, this is a very common problem with the 'Peugeot 308'... So potential owner take note on this... Before your car hit 20,000km, get your car diagnose by Peugeot service center as the warranty for battery is only 20,000km only... Meaning they won't replace for free and after that you are on your own and the original battery is very costly to replace...

Few months ago, I found out that the car lacks power and is hard to drive it smoothly anymore... This particular problem have been dragging on for months as I kept sending my car for diagnostic and they told me that there is nothing wrong with it... But the more I drive, the more frustrated I became... So I decided to call the head mechanic and told him my problems... Schedule a date and off my car went for another round of diagnose... Again the answer is the same... Nothing wrong with it BUT the head mechanic found out that there is a leak in one of the vacuum hose and it replace the hose... Guess what problem solve!!! Now my car is smoother to drive and I'm enjoying every single minute of it!!!

just wondering, which service centre that you sent your 308T to for diagnosis?

thanks.

i sent it to 'chan sow lin' peugeot service center... the service center is not directly under nasim but the service provided is quite ok so i just stick to it...

It really many problem of this 308turbo?how about the maintainance and every service change? It's costly? I am no confident and worry to buy it.

hi Kuan @ Kit,

i must admit that this car do have some common problem... as mine is the older generation that came equip with a 4 speed auto, i believe the one with 6 speed will have less problem... but the 'depollution system faulty' is a very common error and this will give you headache because it doesn't pinpoint to a specific error... for my case is turbocharger problem but my friend is timing chain problem... if you don't have the error code than the car is nothing to worry about... another problem is the battery... prone to failure...

maintenance wise, i can say is almost the same as japanese car but slightly higher... normal service around RM4xx - RM5xx... more major service cost around RM7xx - RM8xx... wear and tear parts such as tyre are expensive if you opt to use back 'Continental Sport Contact 3'... brake pad cost around RM5xx++ for front and back is slightly cheaper... brake pad change around every 4x,xxx ++km...

Hi David, I stumbled upon your blog and currently considering a 308T. Read thru your blog and seems like this car can be quite problematic. Given your experience, would you think it's a still a good buy? On maintenance, how often is the servicing required? Thanks!

true this car can be quite problematic... a lot of my friends got the same problem that i've encounter... some even worse... in my opinion, i still think this is a good buy looking at the current promotion nasim is doing and the asking price... no japanese car is even close to it's build quality, ride and handling characteristic (within this price range)... if you want maintenance free car i suggest you go japanese... but i believe once you go continental, you won't feel like driving japanese anymore... go for a test drive and i'm sure you will be hook... although it has given me countless problem, but i'm still loving it :)...

service schedule is every 10,000km and the service centre uses full synthetic oil on the engine...

Thanks for sharing your experience with this car David. I know what you mean about driving a Conti and about how it is worth paying the price for the built quality. Am thinking of getting it but now it's a matter of timing. I saw some posts mentioning there is a 2012 facelift version. Have you heard of it? Not sure when Nasim will bring in though.

no prob... peugeot 308 have received a facelift last year in other countries but not malaysia... i'm not sure whether nasim will bring in the new facelift version or not... i like the current model more as it looks more aggressive... the new one looks more mature and modern...

My car was running very rough as well. I will check vacuum hose. Battery failed on test so will change that as well just in case its playing up with the ecu. Fuel fitler also changed.

Hello to all,
i stubmle to your post while i was checking for peugeot 308 problems. I have one for almost for 4.5 years now. 16 turbo 4-speed auto. What do you mean the driving was rough? Beacuse since i got from the last yearly maintenance i noticed that when i use the cruise control at 120km the engine rpm was not steady as before. I was driving in the same road and before the engine rpm was about 3.1k while now it wouldnt go bellow 3.4k and sometimes was jumping to 3.8k on its own. I also noticed increased fuel consumption. I took it to the dealeship here in my country (Cyprus) twice but the said that there is nothing wrong. But i know my car and how it acts on the specific road beacuse i do that route a lot. Is it the same problem you faced? If you have any ideas i would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

i believe we have different problem... my car was lack of power and the gear changes was not smooth and it kept jerking... with constant throttle, the car will jerk for no apparent reason... but the rpm remain the same...

Hi David,
You just make me worried to buy an used Peugeot 308 Turbo (4 speed) now. I notice lot of ppl share their concern & complaint. I'm doubt if I should buy this used car.

hi Sam... frankly speaking, the 308 Turbo indeed have a lot of problems... but after solving those normal one that almost everyone have, i believe it will be a good buy cause the car is really enjoyable to drive...

'depollution system faulty' is a very common problem and there are a few culprits... turbo and timing chain is the most common... gearbox problem is also quite common but the rate of having a faulty gearbox is way lower than the 'depollution system faulty' which almost all 308 turbo will encounter... some will have engine head problem where engine oil will leak out from it... after solving these problems, i believe it will serve you for quite some time... but the battery issue cannot be solve... prepare to change battery very often!!!

Hi david
How expensive the battery is?

hi rinarinalove,

it depends on what battery you get for the 'Pug'... if original yes it is expensive and the life span is shorter compare to third party one... original battery cost around RM5xx++ and third party one cost less than RM3xx...

if you're getting a new car then shouldn't be a problem as they are giving 5 years warranty now... be prepare to face problems when using this car... there are a few common problems that almost all '308 turbo' will get...

a word of caution when purchasing a used '308 turbo'... better get the newer 6 speed model as oppose to older version that came with 4 speed auto just like mine... gearbox will be an issue after some time... preferable get one which is still under warranty...

would advise the existing users check the timing chain, my bro's Peugeot 308 timing chain broken not even hit 60k mileage...how this could be???

I just bought one today. Might get it in the end of this month.

Really excited. But need to hold on cause nothing is perfect. So wont afraid if some problems gonna appear in a while.

The story is actually i cancelled the order n tend to burn my deposite of 500MYR because i read some girls feedback n review about their car being towed like 5times. In the end it all because of the battery. Hha. N they were very furious over that. N when i think back. I did encounter with all those problem with my kancil. Hheh. Undergraduate. In the end i came here.

This is a blog of saviour. I'm gonna take notes on all those problem when troubleshooting it one day. Thanks David for taking your time for fellows 308

hi david , i am an owner of peugeot 308 6 speed auto,i want to know the tranmission fluid of it

hi Chloe,

i don't really know the transmission fluid for AL6 gearbox... the best is stay with the original one... unlike engine oil, i don't really dare to take the risk of using other transmission oil for our car as the gearbox is quite problematic!!!

as your car is using the 6 speed gearbox, be prepare to fork out more than RM1k if you buy from service centre... outside should be cheaper... can get for less than RM1k... the price to pay for 2 extra ratio...

Hi David,

How much for 4 speed transmission oil? Is 6 speed better and less problem than 4 speed gear box ?

Anonymous said...

Hi David,

1 yr need to change how many time battery ?

can't really remember the price of the transmission oil for 4 speeder... should be less than RM500... if you wanna buy, better go for 6 speeder... less problem (but still problematic!!!) and better fuel consumption...

as for battery, i tried changing 2 batteries in one year... battery is one issue with 308... mine can't last a year!!!

Hi David,

1st, thanks for sharing your story.

if 308T having a prob like 'depollution system faulty' is it will effect on the fuel consumption?

thanks.

is difficult to say as the terms 'depollution system faulty' is very general... it can be your turbo or timing chain to some really small problem... so can't really say whether it affects the fuel consumption or not... but if your car is under performing with high fuel consumption, chances are you need to decarbonized your engine...
